At Moscow State Medical University named after. Sechenov created an improved allergy chip

Scientists from Sechenovsky and Vienna Medical Universities have developed an improved version of the allergy chip. University of Vienna professor Rudolf Valenta said that silicon technology was used to create the chip instead of glass. Due to the opacity, the sensitivity of the chip increases by 5 times.

The allergy chip allows one drop of blood to detect the presence of immunoglobulins E to more than 100 allergens. Rudolf Valenta emphasized that chip testing will take place in all regions of Russia to identify the most common allergens for each area. “This will make it possible to create vaccines tailored to the needs of residents of a particular region,” Valenta concluded.

New device developed to reduce risk during spinal fusion

Scientists from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand have developed a prototype product and software to reduce the risk of spinal fusion. The message was published on the Healthcare-in-Europe.com portal.

The authors noted that spinal fusion is a highly invasive procedure that has a high failure rate after just five years. Moreover, at the end of the intervention, surgeons cannot be sure of success - this is confirmed only by X-rays four months later.

The developed product is attached to a rod installed during spinal fusion, like a strain gauge. It is wirelessly connected to software to interpret the signals received from the device.

A method has been created for diagnosing chronic kidney disease using urine analysis

Molecular biologists from the Skoltech Research Center conducted a study based on biomaterials from 46 patients suffering from three types of chronic kidney diseases, as well as two dozen healthy people. They were able to identify a set of protein molecules whose concentration changes over the course of kidney disease. The researchers used the learned set of molecules to create a machine learning system to automate the diagnosis of kidney diseases with high accuracy. The algorithm helps determine the severity of membranous nephropathy by how much peptides GPX3, PLMN and A1AT are present in biofluid samples.

“We have established a list of proteins, the concentration of which may indicate the type and severity of the pathology that causes chronic kidney disease in a particular patient. Our approach is applicable to three types of pathologies: focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, small change disease, which often precedes it, and membranous nephropathy,” explains Skoltech senior researcher Alexey Kononikhin. The main goal of the new method is to quickly and painlessly diagnose severe kidney diseases in order to avoid irreversible changes in the organ.
