A new rapid analysis has been developed to identify the causes of fever in children
Scientists have developed and tested a simplified method for identifying the causative agent of infectious or inflammatory diseases in children. Using the new HEALTH test, a simple blood test will reveal the cause of a child's fever within an hour.
Researchers at Imperial College London have developed and validated a diagnostic method for identifying and differentiating 18 infectious or inflammatory diseases in children, including group B streptococcus, respiratory syncytial virus and tuberculosis. The results of the study are published on the Innovation Origins portal.
The researchers analyzed data from several thousand patients, including more than 1,000 children, with 18 types of infectious or inflammatory diseases. They assessed which genes were “turned on” and “turned off” in response to various infectious diseases, creating a molecular portrait of pathologies.
The scientists then used machine learning to profile gene expression in response to pathogen exposure, focusing on a panel of 161 genes across 18 disease states. The results were confirmed with the participation of 411 children hospitalized with sepsis or severe infectious diseases. In the analysis of the blood of these children, gene expression was determined. The diagnosis was additionally confirmed using modern clinical methods.
The functional test is not yet available for clinical practice. An additional study involving thousands of patients in hospitals in Europe, Africa and Asia is planned. But now scientists say that this approach will help ensure the correct and timely treatment of each patient, optimizing the use of antibiotics and reducing the time to diagnose inflammatory diseases.
