An artificial intelligence program made it possible to diagnose melanoma with 100% accuracy
Software for identifying skin tumors based on artificial intelligence made it possible to diagnose melanoma in 100% of cases. The only case of basal cell carcinoma missed by the program was later diagnosed by a dermatologist. Researchers at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust have developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) model capable of diagnosing melanoma with 100% accuracy. The results of the study, presented during the annual meeting of European dermatologists EADV Congress 2023, were published by EurekAlert. The study involved 22,356 patients with suspected malignant skin tumors. The observation period was 2.5 years. The third version of AI-based software identified 100% (59 out of 59) of melanoma cases, 99.5% of all skin tumors (189 out of 190). In addition, the new model diagnosed 92.5% (541 of 585) of precancerous lesions. The developers noted that this is a significant step forward compared to the first version of the program, released in 2021, when it detected only 85.9% of melanoma cases, 83.8% of skin tumors and 54.1% of precancerous lesions.
NSU scientists have developed a software module for diagnosing brain tumors on MRI images
The software module is based on a data set developed by laboratory researchers, which contains information about more than a thousand neurosurgical patients with postoperative diagnoses confirmed by histological and immunohistochemical methods. This data set was generated jointly with the Federal Center for Neurosurgery (Novosibirsk). The algorithms were developed with the support of a grant from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR), and the software module was developed within the framework of the Priority 2030 program.
